Tinnitus is a hearing disorder which involves hearing noises that are actually not caused by sounds coming from the outside world. A number of underlying causes generated at any level of the auditory system may result in this disorder. Factors such as emotional stress, traumatic brain injury, excessive earwax, and exposure to loud noise can severely affect hearing. Tinnitus is categorized into three types which are named as subjective tinnitus, objective tinnitus, and pulsatile tinnitus. The disorder is typically subjective, which means that the noises a person hears are not identifiable by physicians or hearing technicians using current technology. In certain cases, tinnitus can be detected by an individual using a stethoscope. This condition is called objective tinnitus. Pulsatile tinnitus is described as experiencing sound that beats in time with the pulse. Tinnitus can be cured through talk therapy, sound therapy, or hearing aids.
