An Eyewitness Account of the Battle of Gettysburg by Participant July 1863. The Civil War Diary of Lt. Henry J. Waltz

The Battle of Gettysburg was the final act of what is considered to be one of the most pivotal military campaigns in American history. Approximately 7,058 soldiers, almost neatly divided between Union and Confederate, lost their lives over the course of the climactic three-day battle. As President Abraham Lincoln eulogized in his address at Evergreen Cemetery on November 19, 1863: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”

Henry Jackson Waltz enlisted on October 28, 1861, and was mustered into Company “I” of the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. His Civil War diary, unpublished before now, adds to the long list of firsthand accounts of life as a Union soldier before, during, and after this pivotal battle. Numerous images of original documents enhance the text.
