Contemporary political institutions rest on dividing society into groups. Once upon a time, this was the structure of European societies. It is gone, however, through individualisation and globalisation, and elsewhere it did never exist. But group-based institutions rule the world. The resulting conflict between group-based institutions and individualistically structured societies is the big issue of our time. All major current problems result from this tension: climate destruction, populism and civil war show the need to rethink democracy. And we can do better: With Civil democracy, digitally storing trust for a responsible involvement of civil society and ‘meta-decision freedom’ between direct democracy and civil society representation.
