by Major General Stutterheim (Author)

An excellent account of The Battle of Austerlitz, fought on 2 December 1805. This was a major victory for Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army against the combined forces of Russia and Austria. Located near the town of Austerlitz, the battle resulted in a decisive French triumph, forcing Austria out of the Third Coalition and significantly impacting the course of the Napoleonic Wars.

Stutterheim was well placed to write a history of this battle, having led a cavalry brigade in Michael von Kienmayer’s Advance Guard column at the battle, which is considered one of Napoleon’s most brilliant military victories and is remembered for its strategic genius and its impact on the geopolitical landscape of Europe.

About the book: The first French edition was published anonymously in 1805 under the title ‘La bataille d’Austerlitz’. Major Pine-Coffin, who was an English army officer and colonial administrator who served as Governor of St. Helena from 1821 to 23, translated Stutterheim’s work into English in 1806.

Pine-Coffin bemoaned the fact that he could not find a suitable map of the area for his edition, so for this N&MP edition we have added a useful map of the battle from Sir Archibald Alison’s Atlas. The notes “by a French officer” are ascribed to Napoleon.
