“The Catholic Church teaches [insert political party line] about [insert social issue]!” Does it? While many fantastic works have synthesized Catholic Social Teaching, the subject remains a mystery to many: what does the Catholic Church REALLY teach about immigration/wages/contraception – and hundreds of other issues? Is Pope Francis a radical departure from past popes on social issues like Capitalism, the environment, or immigration? Is the representation of what the Catholic Church teaches tinted by our political party allegiances? Historically, why do our political parties think the way they do on issues? To find answers to those questions, one can – and should – read a synthesis of Catholic Social Teaching, of which there are many. This work, however, introduces Catholic social from its primary source: authoritative, official Church teaching. This is not commentary on Catholic Social Teaching – this IS Catholic Social Teaching. Most importantly, this curation allows readers to trace the continuity of the principles behind this wisdom over the past 150 years – from Leo XIII to Pope Francis.
